I’ve used this grinder for pretty much the whole spectrum of grind sizes (with the exception of espresso or Turkish grind). These included Aeropress, V60, Chemex, Siphon pot, French Press, and Moka pot. Apparently you can do an espresso grind with this, but you’d probably need to go up to the double-the-price next model to get a quality and consistent grind that fine. The biggest difference in the Virtuoso (up from the Encore) is the quality of the parts. I mentioned, these parts don’t wear down near as fast. Additionally, you get a grind consistency that you don’t get as much from the Encore. What I learned about the burr grinders is that they don’t let anything bigger than your selected grind size pass through; however, you can get grinds finer than your grind setting making their way through. That’s where the Virtuoso shines over the Encore (that, and grinding everything MUCH faster). Why a Burr Grinder? Burr grinders consist of 2 burr rings that can be adjusted so that the space between the larger and smaller rings can be larger or smaller. Because of this, only coffee grounds of that size can pass from the hopper into the grounds bin. This is different from the grinders that contain spinning blades and grounds inside the same chamber. The grinders with the metal blades have no way of generating a consistent size in the coffee grounds. The result is a mixed course and super fine grind, which produces an irregular brew time. The heat from the spinning blades also heats and “cooks” the grounds, producing bitter coffee. A quality burr grinder, such as the Virtuoso, solves all of these issues. What I love about Baratza grinders, compared to others, is the investment into the longevity of the product. They know that servicing and replacing parts works well for vehicles, so why not the same with a high-end grinder. They make these in a way in which they can be serviced for any issues and last virtually a lifetime. If there are ever any issues, Baratza has a program where you can send the grinder in to them, they will fix whatever the issue may be, and then recalibrate and clean it and give you a 6-month warrantee. They have troubleshooting guides and instructions (as well as instructional videos on youtube) for how to take apart and fix your grinder.
